The Fine Print Trap: Starlink’s 20% Switching Penalty and Hardware Charges

Part 4 of 5 in our series on the Starlink price increase and smarter alternatives.

Quick answer: What should you check before changing or cancelling Starlink?

A recent Starlink Residential notice says the plan price will be $156 per month and that, if a customer switches plans before the 30-day period ends, the price shown will increase by 20% in 30 days. The notice also says customers renting a Starlink kit must return it within 30 days of cancellation or be charged the kit’s full retail price. These are important details to check before making a change. Rodeo Stampede 5G has different plan options, with prices and agreement terms published on Rodeo’s Stampede 5G page.

This is the fourth article in our five-part series comparing Starlink’s new rate notice with Rodeo Stampede 5G. The goal is not to tell anyone to cancel a service they rely on. It’s to make the fine print easier to understand, so you can compare options before you act.

Do you ever wonder why the cheapest advertised price isn't the one on your bill?

Advertised prices describe a plan under specific conditions: an agreement length, a hardware arrangement, an eligibility check, sometimes an area. When any of those conditions change — you switch plans, move, or your equipment situation differs — the applicable price can change too. That's why the fine print matters more than the headline number: the notice's 20% plan-switch increase and the rental-kit full-retail charge both live in those conditions, not in the advertised monthly figure. Reading the terms before you act is the single most effective way to avoid a surprise.

What does Starlink's 20% plan-switch notice mean?

The notice says that if a customer switches plans before the 30-day period is up, “the price you see in your account” will increase by 20% in 30 days. That wording matters. It describes a change to the price displayed for a plan, not a stated flat-dollar switching fee. The amount a customer would pay after the change depends on the price shown for the plan they select.

The same notice states that Starlink Residential will cost $156 per month. Treat this as the price given in that notice, not a promise that every Starlink customer in every location has the same rate. Customers should check their own current plan details and terms before switching.

What can happen if I switch plans or cancel rented Starlink equipment?

The notice sets out two separate things to check: the price change that applies if you switch plans within 30 days, and the return deadline for rented hardware after cancellation. A plan switch may mean the price displayed in your account rises by 20% in 30 days, according to the notice. Cancelling service with a rented kit starts a separate 30-day equipment-return clock. If the rental kit is not returned within that period, Starlink says it may charge the full retail price. Check your account and the applicable Starlink Terms of Service for instructions that apply to you.

Is the 20% increase the same as an early-cancellation fee?

Not according to the notice’s wording. It describes a 20% increase to the price shown after switching plans within the stated window; it does not describe that increase as a flat fee for cancelling service. That distinction can help you compare your options accurately, but it does not remove the need to read your plan details before changing anything.

Starlink’s published terms also describe a full-retail-price charge if a rented kit is not returned within 30 days of cancellation. That charge is about the equipment return, not the 20% plan price change. If you rent equipment, review the return steps, condition requirements and deadline before cancelling, and keep the shipping records.

This is practical advice for any provider: read the fine print before you switch anything. Confirm the effective date, the price after a change, whether your equipment is rented or purchased, and what needs to be returned.

How do Rodeo Stampede 5G’s published terms compare?

Rodeo offers a month-to-month choice as well as annual agreements. The annual options have a commitment and an early-cancellation fee; the monthly prices are not the only terms worth comparing. Here is a summary of the current published options:

Plan or term Monthly price Agreement and equipment What to know
Starlink Residential, as stated in the recent notice $156 Plan-specific terms; rented kits have a return deadline Notice says a plan switch before 30 days results in a 20% increase to the price shown in 30 days. Unreturned rented kit may be charged at full retail price.
Rodeo Standard Annual $89 12-month agreement; eligible hardware purchased separately Early cancellation carries a $350 fee; remaining contract months are not also charged.
Rodeo month-to-month $99 No long-term agreement; eligible hardware purchased separately No annual cancellation fee; customers can change or cancel without a long-term commitment.
Rodeo Elite Annual $129 12-month agreement; included equipment choice $65 one-time shipping and setup. Equipment ownership transfers after the initial agreement is satisfied and the account is in good standing.

Prices, eligibility and terms matter. For example, the $89 Standard Annual price requires a 12-month agreement and separately purchased eligible hardware; the $99 option does not include that annual service commitment. The Elite Annual option includes a hardware choice, but it also has a 12-month agreement. Rodeo’s published terms state that early cancellation of an annual plan carries a $350 fee. For Elite Annual, the supplied equipment and SIM must also be returned within 14 calendar days after early cancellation.

That $350 fee is worth stating plainly. The remaining months of the annual agreement are not also charged, but the fee is still a real cost to consider. Review the Rodeo service terms and the order details before choosing an annual plan.

What is the monthly price difference?

Comparing the $156 monthly price in the Starlink notice with Rodeo’s listed monthly prices gives a simple starting point:

Those are differences in monthly service prices, not guaranteed savings. They do not account for separately purchased hardware, setup, taxes, eligibility or whether a plan fits your needs. In particular, Standard Annual requires a 12-month agreement and separately purchased eligible hardware. Compare the complete cost of the service and equipment, not just the monthly number.

Is Rodeo Stampede 5G available everywhere?

Rodeo Stampede 5G offers nationwide 5G and 4G LTE coverage, subject to the selected carrier’s coverage, plan eligibility and approved location. Nationwide coverage does not mean every address, building or travel route will have service. Actual connection type and performance can vary with location, signal, equipment and network conditions. Check your address and intended use before ordering.

Rodeo reports better-than-99.999% uptime for its network. That figure is not a promise that every cellular connection will be available at every location or a substitute for checking the plan terms and local coverage. For more detail, review Rodeo’s coverage and portability information.

What should you check before switching providers?

Before making a change, confirm the following:

  1. The next price: What will your monthly rate be after the change takes effect?
  2. The deadline: When does any price adjustment or equipment-return period begin and end?
  3. Equipment ownership: Did you buy the hardware, or is it rented or included with a plan?
  4. Cancellation costs: Does your agreement have an early-cancellation fee or a return requirement?
  5. Service at your location: Is the alternative actually available where you plan to use it?

Rodeo’s local support team can help explain Stampede options and terms. For people in the Lewiston and Clarkston area, that means talking with a regional provider rather than trying to compare an unfamiliar plan on your own. You can also reach Rodeo at 509-769-3030.
